It's the beginning of the week again and here we are... how do we go about "impressing" our bosses and colleagues that we are really "busy" and not bother us?
1. Plan Ahead
Appointments for the week and following needs to be planned out. Filling those timeslots with "stuff' we need to achieve or work on. They can be either genuine or just time for you to think about stuff or to just laze around. With you calendar entries full, and with a stressful look on your face, usually, people do not bother you with stuff unless they have no choice.
2. Meetings with team members
If you are a manager or a team lead, do schedule weekly meeting with them. Such meeting, the agenda are usually based on discussion based on actual work that needs advice or to plan ahead for projects.
Once you have cleared all work-related issues, then it's time for you to throw ideas for the team to discuss or gather feedbacks from them for discussion. Such meetings not only help burn your time away, it also allows you to see the teams ability to help lessen load to the overall operations. It might end up a waste of time with no conclusion. Either way, such sessions allows you to see who are the "work smart" people. These people will be able to assist you later on...
3. Paperwork
My desk is never neat, paper is everywhere. Depending on the type of person you are it work both ways. Messy desk, well as long as you can find your stuff it's ok, Neat desk, you can have your paperwork stack up. Some organisations have so many processes that ...well getting certain work done takes time. So you being a "meticulous" person definitely is required to check your work properly and ensuring that what you are doing is in the right order. Take your time don't rush it, at least the when people do question about it, you can explain and you know what you are talking about.
4. Managing deadlines
Always give yourself some room when meeting with deadlines, most of us know that when ask when can we submit the report or project, we will give ourselves a big buffer. 3 days worth of work may result in a 1-week time frame. When you finish the project earlier, you look good, you boss is happy.
I always submit my work close to my deadline but always before but never way ahead.
Now this is what most of us is doing, but what you should do is to with some of the remaining free time, you should always do more research and have more information on hand, in other words, if the task requires a passing rate of 80%, always do a bit more gather more information (extra or outside info) pertaining to the task so that when this information is required suddenly, you have it ready. Never submit 100% work for work that requires 60-90%. Leave room for yourself. When people do ask you about it, "oh it's not really complete yet as I found new information and am doing some reading up/ research on it" Whether it's "reading up" or "research", you decide"
5. Doing things in the most efficient manner
Bill Gates said "I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it." My suggestion, aim for less work for resolving issues and not re-inventing the wheel for every new issue that comes along the way. Don't go around with solutions looking for problems. Focus on the priorities.
Efficiency, taking the shortest path to the solution. Here is a link pertaining to the why clever and lazy people make great leaders. This is also in relation to point 2. Which one of those mentioned are you?
Once your daily work or operation has reached the most "efficient" your many free time will come and you are able to do your personal stuff but other people will think you are still "busy"
